Clarkdale Historic District- Austell, Georgia

with Gaskins Engineering, Inc.

The Clarkdale Thread Mill and its adjacent company housing village were built in 1931. The village is believed to be the last ‘company town’ developed in Georgia. In the late 1990’s, the village was declared an historic district.

When the original street trees began to rapidly decline and damage the surrounding homes, streets and sidewalks, the current homeowners commissioned Gaskins Engineering and Anderson Design to develop a plan to replace the trees with new street trees and repair the damaged street and walks. Working with historic preservation representatives from the State of Georgia, a new palette of trees was developed, emphasizing Allee Elms and Crape Myrtles where overhead power lines were in conflict. With the hardscape and landscape improvements in place, the streets are once again walkable and the Clarkdale village continues to charm both residents and visitors alike.
