Downtown Jefferson, Georgia is unique to most comparably sized cities in that it has an intact town square. Throughout the years, road modifications intended to help (speed up) the traffic flow of two state routes through town has resulted in a sea of asphalt and dangerous conditions for pedestrians. The team of Clark Patterson Lee and Anderson Design was charged with restoring the charm of the town square environment and improving the pedestrian experience. Now the sidewalks are the dominant paving pattern and pedestrians have well defined crossings of streets and driveways. Landscape zones separate parking areas within the square from the sidewalks and street beyond. A pattern of street trees, attractive street furniture and decorative lighting complete the street scene. Expanded storefront plaza areas allow space for additional outdoor dining opportunities.
